Dodge Discontinues Grand Caravan, the “Workhorse” of Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Platforms
Swan Song of the Most Popular Wheelchair Van in the U.S.
Introduced in 1984, the Dodge Grand Caravan and Plymouth Voyager pioneered the minivan concept. U.S. sales of the Grand Caravan hit their peak at 300,000 in 1996 and 1997, and have hovered around the 100,000 to 150,000 range since. The Caravan lived through five design updates, the most current dating back to 2008, and throughout its history served as a mainstay of affordable wheelchair vans. When the similar Chrysler Town and Country was replaced by the all-new Chrysler Pacifica in 2017, there was speculation that the manufacturer planned on replacing the Grand Caravan with a Pacifica-based utility vehicle, but Dodge did not confirm any follow-up models at the time. The cancellation of the Grand Caravan line was officially announced in February, 2020, and Dodge recently followed up with the news that the replacement vehicle would be built on the new Pacifica platform, and sold under the “Voyager” badge.
With its status as the workhorse of commercial and wheelchair accessible minivan platforms, the Grand Caravan checked all the boxes in terms of versatility, reliability, and affordability, though the new Voyager is slated to cost about $6k more than comparable Grand Caravan models, putting its future in these areas at risk.
Get your new or used accessible Grand Caravan before they’re gone!
New Grand Caravans will be available through the 2020 model year, but will not be for sale in California, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington due to the more stringent emissions rules in those states. A limited supply of used Grand Caravans will still be available nationwide, but high demand is steadily driving up prices and its unclear how long this supply will last. Superior Van & Mobility currently holds an expanded inventory of affordable Grand Caravans purchased prior to the current surge in demand, and is encouraging anyone interested in purchasing one of these vehicles to act fast, as once they’re gone, THEY’RE GONE!
