The VMI Northstar Access360 Toyota Sienna hybrid handicap-accessible wheelchair van has been the industry leader for its available interior space and headroom. However, with the recent changes and technological improvements, the new VMI Toyota Sienna hybrid wheelchair van is also one of the most technologically advanced!
Many have asked, and it’s here! The new VMI 2021 Toyota Sienna Hybrid handicap van with a side-entry, in-floor ramp system is available with an ALL-WHEEL DRIVE powertrain. It’s a VMI exclusive!
The VMI Northstar Toyota Sienna Hybrid wheelchair van conversion features a patented, ultra-low, in-floor power ramp system with a 30-inch ramp that allows safe entry and exit by some of the largest wheelchairs. The ramp conveniently stows and deploys from underneath the floor, creating additional interior space and maneuverability for a wheelchair user and their passengers. The ramp is made from a high-strength aluminum alloy and can support loads up to 1000 lbs.
In case of a power failure, VMI incorporates SureDeploy technology. SureDeploy utilizes a secondary power source outside the vehicle’s power supply to continue operating the vehicle’s in-floor ramp system and power sliding door.
The obstacle-free front seats of the VMI Toyota Sienna hybrid handicap van allow for easy removal. The removable seating option enables users to create multiple seating arrangements for both the wheelchair user and passengers. The space up front is also large enough to accommodate two wheelchairs side-by-side if needed.
In addition, VMI introduced the industry’s first seat-switching technology! This feature allows the switching of the front seats between the driver and passenger positions without losing seat functionality. A wheelchair user can start driving from their wheelchair, stop and switch positions with the passenger, and only use one seat. The other seat can be left at home, freeing up valuable interior space.
The kneeling system in a Toyota wheelchair van is designed to reduce the ramp angle, making it easier for wheelchair users to navigate the ramp. The VMI Toyota Sienna hybrid mobility van features an automatic, integrated “kneeling” system.
When the deploy ramp command is initiated, the onboard computer activates an actuator mounted on the vehicle’s rear. As the actuator engages, it lowers the van’s ramp side closer to the ground, reducing the ramp angle. The lower the ramp angle, the easier it is for someone to enter and exit the vehicle.
The floor from behind the firewall to the third-row seat in the Toyota Sienna hybrid mobility van is lowered to create the industry’s most immense headroom! This drop in the floor also creates a more significant door opening height of 56.1 inches. This massive floor lowering makes the VMI Toyota handicap van the ideal solution for the tallest seated wheelchair user.
The AWD drivetrain on the new VMI Toyota Sienna Hybrid wheelchair van is the first in the mobility industry. This latest advancement is significant for those users in northern climates or those wanting the peace of mind of advanced traction and control.

ParkSmart™ is a patented product feature found exclusively on select VMI wheelchair-accessible vehicles. It automatically alerts careless drivers who may be parking too close to a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, blocking ramp access.
The ParkSmart™ system works after the user engages the system before exiting the vehicle. As the wheelchair user exits the vehicle, the ParkSmart™ system will engage and activate 30 seconds after the side door is closed. Once engaged, the system monitors the passenger side of the vehicle for any objects that come within the acceptable distance of the vehicle that would inhibit the wheelchair user from entering their vehicle upon return safely.
The system uses the same technology found on rear collision systems of other vehicles that detect object proximity. Once an object is detected within range of the ramp side door, the vehicle emits an audible alert and a recorded message. This message advises that the vehicle’s ramp system is being blocked.

If you’ve ever owned a handicap-accessible vehicle, you know rust has been an issue. However, thanks to VMI, this is no longer a problem.
Every VMI wheelchair-accessible vehicle is now built with Galvanneal Steel and is also e-coated to minimize rust.
Because of this advancement, VMI extended its rust-through corrosion warranty to seven years on all 2021 and newer.
Unlike our competitor’s vehicles, VMI does not alter the factory suspension during the conversion process.
Not altering the suspension provides our drivers with a more true factory ride and handling.
It may sound like a small feat, by unlike our competitor’s vehicles, VMI incorporated an actual cup holder into the front console.
Our cup holder is designed to hold more than just a skinny soda can.
If you’ve seen a wheelchair van driving down the road, you probably noticed the large gap between the top of the wheel and the vehicle’s body. This gap is created during the lowering of the floor of the vehicle. VMI has refined this look by adding sleek aerodynamic covers. This was one of our customer’s biggest wish items, and we delivered!
