In July 2020, BraunAbility had a mid-year conversion change to the CompanionVan® conversion. The CompanionVan® wheelchair van conversion went from a manual wheelchair ramp to a new power wheelchair ramp. Effective August 3, 2020, new BraunAbility CompanionVan® wheelchair van conversions will be built with the new power wheelchair ramp system. If researching or shopping for pre-owned units, verify the ramp type of interest since both vehicle types will be available for some time.
(Conversions After Aug. 3, 2020)
The ramp on the CompanionVan®, power fold-out, handicap wheelchair van is operated with a separate keyfob and is 29.25 inches wide. The ramp is lightweight aluminum and has a load capacity of 1000 lbs. The ramp’s surface is powder-coated with a durable, non-skid finish and slotted to remove debris.
As part of the conversion process, the floor of the Dodge Grand Caravan, CompanionVan®, is lowered from just behind the front seats to the rear bench seat and provides 55 inches, front to back, of wheelchair-accessible space. Lowering the floor does two things: First, it allows for a taller door entry and easy entry. Second, it provides a wheelchair user with a direct line of sight while riding as a passenger.
