The VMI Honda Odyssey is integrated with a full power, in-floor wheelchair ramp deployment system for unobstructed door opening. The ramp has a usable width of 30.5 inches and a door opening height of 55.25 inches. These dimensions make the VMI Northstar, Honda Odyssey handicap accessible wheelchair van larger than its closest competitor.
The VMI Northstar, Honda Odyssey wheelchair accessible van is even engineered with an additional .75 inches of ground clearance to reduce vehicle scraping while going over raised or uneven surfaces; something that can be problematic in vehicles from competitors.
The VMI Northstar, Honda Odyssey wheelchair accessible van features a patented, ultra-low, in-floor wheelchair ramp deployment system with a 30-inch wide ramp and a 8.65-degree ramp angle for added ease of entry and exit. The in-floor wheelchair van’s ramp conveniently deploy’s from and stows underneath the floor of the vehicle. By doing so, this creates additional interior space and maneuverability for the wheelchair user and his/her passengers. This ramp is made from high-strength aluminum alloy and can support loads up to 1000 lbs.
Beginning with the 2021 model year, VMI will be including this incredible new feature on all its wheelchair accessible vehicles for sale. ParkSmart™, is an industry exclusive and can only be found on, VMI wheelchair accessible vehicles. It is a patent pending, handicap parking violator deterrent system to help users of their vehicles avoid parking in a handicap accessible parking space and having themselves blocked-in by a careless driver.
The ParkSmart™ system works after the user engages the system via a button found in the interior of the vehicle. As the wheelchair user exits the vehicle, the ParkSmart™ system will engage and activate 30 seconds after the side door is shut. Once engaged the system monitors the passenger side of the vehicle for any objects that come within the acceptable distance of the vehicle that would inhibit the wheelchair user to safely enter their vehicle upon return.
The system works by using the same technology found on rear collision systems of other vehicles that detect object proximity. The only difference in the ParkSmart™ system from VMI, is that in addition to the audible alert given off externally when activated the system also employs a recorded message advising the other driver that they parked too close and to please move their vehicle. Here is a video that demonstrates the ParkSmart™, handicap parking violator deterrent system.
In an effort to reduce ramp angle and make it easier for the wheelchair user to enter and exit his/her handicap van, this VMI Northstar, Honda Odyssey wheelchair accessible van conversion features an automatic, integrated “kneeling” system. The kneeling system activates when the deploy ramp command is initiated from the key-fob or set of interior switches. The on-board computer activates an actuator that is mounted on the rear passenger side of vehicle. The actuator works to lower the wheelchair vans ramp-side of the vehicle to reduce the ramps angle to only 8.65-degrees. This is especially important to those in manual wheelchairs to make it easier to enter and exit. (This option can also be turned off or on with a switch on the dash as needed or so desired).
The VMI Northstar, Honda Odyssey wheelchair accessible van uses obstacle-free front, interchangeable seating which allows for easy removal and usage. This new seating design allows for multiple seating arrangements. The interchangeable seating is a great feature only found on select, VMI wheelchair accessible vans & handicap vehicles. The interchangeable seats gives users the ability to load one seat and switch from one-side to the other as needed.
EXAMPLE: (Wheelchair user may start out on a trip driving from his/her wheelchair, but after some time become fatigued. The installed seat on the passenger side can easily be moved from the passenger to the driving position to now allow the passenger to drive while the wheelchair user takes a break riding along in the passenger side of the wheelchair van). The space up front is also large enough to accommodate two wheelchairs side-by-side if needed.
ALL new VMI Northstar, Honda Odyssey wheelchair van conversions have floors made from Galvanneal Steel and are E-coated for optimal rust and corrosion prevention. This new material and advanced process in manufacturing makes every new VMI wheelchair accessible van highly-resistant to rust issues. The new steel also has an increased tensile strength which results in a stronger and more durable wheelchair accessible construction
