When it comes to the types of automotive hand controls, the Push / Pull mechanical type is the most common and it allows for multiple hand positions to lower fatigue and cramping; it also allows for two hand contact with the steering wheel while operating the controls.

How They Work

The push/pull system works using a horizontally installed handle for easy grip. This handle can be installed on either the right or left of the steering wheel. To accelerate, the operator pulls the handle toward the steering wheel and pushes the handle away toward the dash for braking.

Benefits in Design

In addition to the obvious benefits, the push / pull type of hand control provides the additional benefits:

  • Reduced finger and thumb strain
  • Reduced fatigue and cramping
  • Increased brake pedal feel and throttle response
  • Easier braking
