Superior Van & Mobility has announced that they have acquired Access Vans of Louisiana. Access Vans of Louisiana currently has two showrooms located in New Orleans and Grosse Tete. They have approximately 13 employees and were founded in 1997 by the husband and wife team of Marcus and Mardel Smith. Superior Van & Mobility has been a family owned and operated business since 1976. They have 7 locations in Kentucky, Indiana and Tennessee with approximately 70 employees. Over the past decade, Superior Van & Mobility’s success is attributed to not only acquisition growth, but an emphasis on customer service and safety.
Superior Van & Mobility represents lowered floor minivan conversion manufacturers such as BraunAbility and Vantage Mobility International (VMI). They also represent wheelchair and scooter lifts manufacturers such as Bruno. They install and service different types of driving aids including spinner knobs, hand controls and high-tech EMC driving equipment.
The Smith’s opened their first location in 1997 in Grosse Tete because of its proximity to both the Baton Rouge and Lafayette communities. Their New Orleans location was opened in 2005 right before Hurricane Katrina struck. Although their showroom did not suffer physical damage, they were without water or power for 6 months. During that time, all operations were moved to Grosse Tete.
In 2009, Mardel Smith passed away and Marcus Smith became sole owner of Access Vans.
Soon after suffering a spinal cord injury himself in 2011, Marcus decided that it was the right time to start considering offers from other mobility dealers that were interested in his business and shared the same core principles. Sam & Kathy Cook, owners of Superior Van & Mobility, were one of the first dealers to approach him. “Operating my business with honesty and integrity both in the eyes of my customers and employees has always been a big priority to me”, says Smith. “Doing things right the first time is more important than doing them fast” he continues. Because of the similarities in these core values, he chose Superior Van & Mobility to lead his team into 2013 and to provide continued support to his customer base.
Both Superior Van & Mobility and Access Vans of Louisiana are members of NMEDA (National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association) and participate in a QAP (Quality Assurance Program). Both company’s technicians are certified to install and service not only wheelchair vans and lifts, but high-tech driving equipment.
Sam Cook said that the decision to expand into Louisiana was an easy one. “I have known Marcus Smith for a very long time. He has been an outstanding supporter of NMEDA for over 18 years and he truly cares about the quality of the products he sells. We will continue to offer great service and mobility options for those needing a mobility product in the New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Lafayette areas. This transition will be an exciting one for the current Access Vans Staff and our Superior Team.
